New Juice
Innovation Strategy supported New Juice in developing strategies and processes to make milk transportation less carbon intensive and help mid-Wales move toward a Net Zero future.
Milk used by the catering facilities on the Aberystwyth University campus is currently transported from Cheshire, a round trip of 200 miles, in single-use plastic containers. The milk produced on the university farm is taken 50 miles away for processing. New Juice’s project looked to find solutions to reduce carbon emissions associated with transportation of milk and reduce single use plastics.
Innovation Strategy worked with New Juice to develop the idea and concept of their project and secured them funding through the Mid Wales Challenge-Led Launchpad. Our team also secured New Juice a Partnership with Aberystwyth University Trawscoed Farm.
New Juice used the funding to conduct a feasibility study in two parts with Innovation Strategy:
-
Part one looked into the feasibility of using litre glass bottles for university catering facilities. A trial secured by Innovation Strategy was conducted, the milk was still transported from Cheshire, but the glass bottles were collected and sent back to be reused.
-
Part two assessed the economic and commercial viability of establishing a micro processing dairy on the university farm to facilitate the milk produced there being used by the on-campus catering services.
New Juice also benefitted from the Skills Builder element of the programme and were joined by a student from Aberystwyth University on a part-time basis who assisted in conducting research and gained new skills and understanding of a small business.
