LOHAS Recycling
Innovation Strategy supported LOHAS Recycling in developing their solution to poultry manure upcycling and turning it into a high-quality fertiliser.
Through developing a process to valorise waste LOHAS Recycling are contributing to the Welsh Governments goal of becoming a zero-waste nation by 2050. Developing a circular economy and reducing consumption is one of the key elements of managing the climate crisis, currently only 7.2% of the global economy is considered circular. Poultry manure is also considered to be one of the greatest causes of river pollution in Wales and so by reusing waste produced on poultry farms LOHAS Recycling are contributing to improving the health of Welsh waterways.
The process developed by LOHAS Recycling uses enzymes to make fertiliser from poultry manure in just three hours without any loss of nutritional content. Traditional methods of breaking down poultry manure into fertiliser take four to six months and require large amounts of space as well as releasing greenhouse gases and leading to a loss in valuable nutrients.
LOHAS Recycling worked with Innovation Strategy to secure funding from the Mid Wales Challenge-Led Launchpad and bring their solution closer to market. LOHAS Recycling were able to scale up their demonstrations to use a machine at the scale it would be used on a farm. Innovation Strategy also supported them in conducting market research, packaging and product label design and selling via the local farm networks.
