Innovation Strategy worked with Aberystwyth University to design and develop the SMART Recovery programme, funded through the Covid Recovery Challenge Fund. SMART Recovery supported businesses in the development of innovative and ‘functional foods’ to promote recovery from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and generate growth across Wales.
SMART Recovery worked towards the Welsh Government’s goal of reducing non-communicable diseases and chronic conditions through encouraging healthier diets. The programme was designed to be closely aligned to the Well-Being of Future Generations Act (2015).
The programme facilitated the growth of an innovation ecosystem for ‘functional foods across Wales. 12 businesses were able to utilise the facilities at AberInnovation to develop their ‘functional foods’ through analytical work, human clinical trials, and consumer perception trials. Innovation Strategy provided the cohort with expert business advice to enable growth, delivering workshops and one-to-one mentoring to support businesses and help them best position their innovation to access the market. The innovation ecosystem created by the programme is still in place, with participating businesses reguarly collaborating and new businesses becoming involved.
