PlantSea
PlantSea is tackling the increasing problem of agricultural plastic waste by developing a 100% biodegradable, soil-enriching product from seaweed.
PlantSea’s seaweed-based bioplastic will be able to replace agricultural plastic sheets, also known as mulch film, which are used to increase crop yields. Currently most plastic mulch films go to landfill and the existing biodegradable mulch films are made from potato starch and do no not biodegrade unless they are ploughed back into the soil and left for a year.
Innovation Strategy worked with the PlantSea team as part of the Mid Wales Challenge-Led Launchpad supporting them in their innovation journey through one-to-one mentoring sessions, thematic workshops and supporting strategy development.
As a result of the Mid Wales Challenge-Led Launchpad funding PlantSea were able to grow their team to include a research assistant and make significant progress towards their goal of making their seaweed based plastic alternative available on the market at a competitive price.
